So this is day one!

In preparation for my complete overhaul of myself, I’ve started to snack on more healthy things. Not that I was a terrible eater before, since I’ve never been one to fancy chocolates, candy, junk food like pop and chips and all the other sugar laden foods we’re bombarded with on a daily basis. However I do enjoy a slice of cheese cake or a glass of rum and raisin ice cream ever so often.

With the busy schedule I live, my eating patterns are all screwed up. I skip breakfast altogether or when I do have breakfast… it’s more of a feast (eggs, bacon, potatoes, tomato, baked beans and toast) . Same goes for lunch (what lunch?) and dinner. Due to my long days I find myself eating very late at night followed by me hitting the bed moments later. Can’t be good for you on any level. But because I starve myself all day, I’m absolutely starving in the late hours of the night.

What I’ve started to do now is buy more fruit (can’t believe I’m now eating fruit) when grocery shopping. So even though I still don’t make time for breakfast in the morning, I do enjoy some sort of fruit or the other. This morning it was one of my favourite north American fruits, the pear.

Some quick facts about pears:

Fiber
Fresh pears offer dietary fiber, much of it in the form of Pectin. A pear weighing 166 grams provides 2.32 grams of crude fiber, and 4 grams of dietary fiber, of which 41% is pectin. Fiber contains no calories, and is a necessary element of a healthy diet, helping to sustain blood sugar levels and promoting regularity. High fiber diets may also help reduce the risk of colon cancer and can help reduce serum cholesterol. Pears are a good source of natural fiber.

Potassium
Fresh pears offer potassium; 210 mg in a medium size pear. Although it is an element lost easily through dehydration or perspiration brought on by active lifestyles or strenuous exercise, potassium is necessary for maintaining heartbeat, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, as well as carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Replenish potassium by eating fresh vegetables, fruits or legumes containing high potassium content— pears are an excellent choice.

Vitamin C
Fresh pears contain Vitamin C. One medium size pear provides 7 mg, or 10% of the RDA for Vitamin C. As one of the antioxidant vitamins, Vitamin C is essential for normal metabolism and tissue repair, helping prevent free radical damage the destructive by-products of the body’s metabolic process. Vitamin C improves the immune system and promotes healing of cuts and bruises and guard against a number of infectious diseases. Fresh pears are a good source for Vitamin C.

Go grab a basket of pears and reach for one the next time you get a craving for something you know you shouldn’t be eating. Not only are pears very tasty as you can see from above… (hide the kids) they’re good for you.

This is a good habit to start. But in general…I think (in my opinion) that losing weight is 80% about food, 20% exercise… So if you want to see results, you have to make sure your diet is in check. I think the key is to PLAN. Plan your meals, plan your week. It take s alittle bit of time, but then you aren’t scrambling.

Have you ever had a green monster? Basically its a green smoothie with whatever you feel like having in it. When I’m in a rush, I throw 1 banana, 2 handfuls of spinach, 8oz of milk (I use soy but you can use whatever) and BLEND. It is delicious, even though it is green. SERIOUSLY, try it. Maybe add some protein… (you can google this and find TONS of recipes, this is a good beginner version).

Greek yogurt might be a good breakfast for you too (lots of protein in one serving and very little fat).

Here’s the thing Lola, things such as yogurt and smoothie was never in my diet before so i’m only just trying (very hard) to start using/liking them. Even fruit and nuts were never part of my diet before. So it’s all a slow transition for me and I do appreciate the advice. I a huge planner 9I like having structure) so I’ll follow your lead and plan my meals for the week as best as I can.

Thank you so much for your tips.

      regards

p.s. I had my first mango smoothie a while back and today I purchased some strawberries and yogurt. So that’s my meal in the am before we lave for my daughters cheerleading comp.

  2. It’s a very sad reality that the biggest problems most dieting plans have, whether they are legit or not, is that a number of the people who are in them do not possess the right amount of willpower to keep with the plan for the long run. The main problem? The diets themselves.
